Minister Fernández returns to Chile to “lead response” after hacking of emails from the Joint Chiefs of Staff

The Minister of National Defense, Maya Fernández (PS), left the Chilean delegation in New York, USA, and headed back to Chile to “lead the response” to the hacking of the emails of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (EMCO) of the Armed Forces of our country.

According to local cybersecurity company Arkavia Networks, a group of hackers called “Guacamaya” exposed around 10 terabytes of emails of different military and police organizations from different countriesamong them, 400 thousand post office belonging to the Chilean EMCO.

For this reason, President Gabriel Boric, who heads the national delegation to the US in the framework of the United Nations General Assembly that is taking place this week, “instructed the minister to return to the country to lead the response to these events “, confirmed the Ministry in a statement.

Also, “the Government has ordered a administrative summary to determine the corresponding responsibilities” and, “in addition, the antecedents have been made available to the Military Justice to give rise to the criminal investigation,” the note added.

The minister’s flight took off on Wednesday night for Chile.

Because of this, the Minister Fernández had to be absent from the ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the speech given by former President Salvador Allende – her grandfather – at the UN General Assembly from 1972.

The activity, held at the Cervantes Institute in New York, was attended by President Boric, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonia Urrejola, the socialist senator Isabel Allende -daughter of the ousted president-, and also the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez.
