The President of Russia, Vladimir Putinannounced this Wednesday a “partial mobilization” of the population to counteract the Ukrainian counter-offensive that has called into question the success of its military campaign.
The measure, which comes into force today, is due to the need to defend the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the president stressed in a televised message to the nation in which he accused the West of seeking the destruction of Russia.
They will be called up only reservists who have completed compulsory military service, he explained in his pre-recorded speech, which began at 9 a.m. Moscow time (3 a.m. Chile time).
“The partial mobilization decree contemplates additional measures to fulfill orders to the military industry”Putin added.
Minutes later, the Russian Defense Minister, Sergei Shoiguhe specified in an interview with the state television channel Rossia 24 that “a total of 300,000 reservists will be called up” in accordance with the decree.
In his speech, Putin justified the invasion of Ukraine, delivered the word “war” for the first time and accused the West of using Ukraine as an instrument to attack Russia.
“The Westerners pushed Ukraine into war with us”he claimed.
The goal of the West is “to weaken, divide and ultimately destroy our country”said the head of the Kremlin, who stressed that “they (Westerners) openly say that in 1991 they were able to dismember the Soviet Union and that now Russia’s turn has come.”
In addition, Putin denounced that the West uses even the “nuclear blackmail”.
“It is not only about the attacks encouraged by the West against the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, which can cause an atomic catastrophe, but also about the declarations of senior NATO officials about the possibility of using weapons of mass destruction against Russia,” he explained.
He stressed that the citizens of Russia can be sure that the country’s territorial integrity, independence and freedom are guaranteed.
“And those who try to blackmail us with the nuclear weapon should know that the compass rose can turn in their direction”warned the Russian president.
Putin’s announcement of a partial mobilization to defend the territorial integrity of Russia is “worrying”British Foreign Secretary of State said on Wednesday. Gillian Kegan.
In a statement to the chain SkyNewsKeegan urged calm before this statement but pointed out that the speech made by the Russian ruler must be taken “very seriously”.
This is “obviously an escalation, and of course now the Russian people will be recruited for this war” in Ukrainestressed the Secretary of State.
Keegan insisted that the UK will help the Ukrainian people “as much as we can”.
The British government reported on Tuesday that it is committed to matching in 2023 the military aid provided to Ukraine this year, estimated at 2,300 million pounds (2,622 million euros), and to supporting the security and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
