Roger Federer: “After beating Sampras’ Grand Slams, the rest has been a bonus”

RRoger Federer, who landed in London last Sunday, held a massive press conference this Wednesday to explain his feelings once he announced that the Laver Cup will be his last competition as an active tennis player.

Decision. “I’ve had a lot of time to make the decision because I haven’t played in more than a year. The decision is the right one because it’s the only one I can make.”

Withdrawal. “I wanted people to be happy in my goodbye and not be telling me all the time how sorry I am.”

Alcaraz’s words about his legacy. “I feel bad for not having played with him. What he has done at the US Open has been fantastic. Being one of the stars of tennis, I have always said that. It was nice to hear his words, we had a rally once at Wimbledon.”

Doubles pair with Nadal. “It is clear that the most beautiful thing would be to play doubles here with Rafa because he has been my great rival”.

Miss. “Putting on my shoes, my shirt before playing, thinking about the game. It’s beautiful and stressful.”

How do you want to be remembered? “I always looked at the consistency of Schumacher or Woods and I’m happy to be compared to them.”

The best moments of his career. “When I beat Sampras at Wimbledon, the 2017 comeback in Australia when I beat Nadal. I haven’t thought about it exactly either.”

O2 Arena in London. “That it’s in London makes me happy because the US Open was scrapped when I saw Serena retire there. The city is one of the most special in my Wimbledon career.”

Recrimination. “Perhaps I would have been more professional earlier in my career.”

tennis GOAT. “I’m proud of what I’ve won. After winning my fifteenth Wimbledon, everything else has been a bonus. Having Sampras in the stands was very special. I’m happy to have been able to win 20 Grand Slams and more than 100 titles.”
