Diabetes is a common disease that appears due to insufficient insulin in the body, as well as excess sugar in the blood. Given this, it can develop serious health problems for those who suffer from it, such as cardiovascular or even kidney diseases.

“Diabetes saccharin or diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not secrete enough insulin or when the body does not effectively use the insulin it produces”, explained the World Health Organization (WHO), about this diagnosis.

And I add, “A common effect of uncontrolled diabetes is hyperglycemia (i.e., high blood glucose), which over time severely damages many organs and systems in the body, especially nerves and blood vessels”referring to the health problems that people with this disease can develop.

Given this scenario, the organization stressed that with a balanced diet, free of sugary foods, as well as carbohydrates and trans fats, together with a constant exercise routine, it is possible to combat this disease. However, since the banana is a vital food in Colombian cuisine, used in hundreds of preparations, many wonder if it can be consumed by a person with diabetes.

The answer varies depending on the type of banana that is specified, although green bananas are characterized by being “salty”, when they ripen they become sweet, like bananas, which are generally eaten ripe, and are even used in some desserts and juices to add freshness and sweetness.

“Green bananas contain fewer sugars and more complex starches, which are glucose chains that are resistant to digestion in the small intestine, so they work in a similar way to fiber, thus avoiding spikes in blood glucose”affirmed the specialized portal Diabetic Sweets, emphasizing that these types of bananas would be ideal for diabetics.

Regarding sweet bananas, the portal He insisted that it depends on the level of maturation of the banana, it is better to avoid those that have a very high percentage, since these are usually very sugary and this can be seen reflected in the regulation of glucose in the blood.. However, they would not represent a danger for diabetics.

“Fruit, in general, is recommended as part of a healthy and balanced diet, which is what is recommended for patients with diabetes. In addition, fruits and vegetables help prevent the onset of other diseases such as cancer or heart problems, the risk of which increases when suffering from diabetes”, confirmed the mentioned portal on bananas, emphasizing that although it is a good option, it is also better limit your consumption.

On the other hand, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK, for its acronym in English) of the United States, stated that when a person has high levels of sugar in his body, he can develop heart disease, eye problems, foot problems, strokes, dental disease, kidney disease, and nerve damage, among others.

And I add, Although there is no cure for diabetes, people with diabetes can take steps to control their disease and stay healthy. emphasizing that a balanced diet low in carbohydrates, sugary foods, trans fats and a constant exercise routine can combat this diagnosis.
