Every September 21 marks the World Alzheimer’s Daya disease that involves world’s leading cause of cognitive impairment. Although the specialists consider that with an opportune diagnosis, activities can be applied that delay the progress of the neurocognitive disorders. However, in Venezuela there are no policies aimed at the elderly population with these neurodegenerative diseases, according to data from Hogar La Ponderosa.

Different institutions in the country are in charge of neuropsychological care of the elderly and one of them is Hogar La Ponderosa, in Caracas. In this place, the experts are dedicated to accompanying patients to prevent the deterioration inherent in degenerative neurocognitive diseases from advancing rapidly.

«One tries to slow down the process. Reaching the final stage of the disease in a year is not the same as it is for this to happen in 10 or 15 years and for that person’s quality of life to be maintained. The bottom line is diagnose as early as possible», indicated Katherine Vergara, neuropsychologist at Hogar La Ponderosa.

The specialist specified that after having a diagnosis, treatments that focus on two specific lines can be started; firstly, the pharmacological ones that are indicated by a specialist doctor and the neuropsychological ones that consist of a evaluation and planning of activities based on what the patient has to keep you cognitively stimulated.

Another of the fundamental factors is to offer information to the relative of the patient, regarding the disease, how to handle the situation Y what to expect from it, as explained by Katherine Vergara. She considered it essential that people be aware that not all older people have cognitive failure. That is why it recommends that relatives go to specialists to make an evaluation and determine if there is normal aging or a cognitive disorder.

These are pathologies that are mostly incurable and progressively affect the human brain they cause language or memory failures when reasoning, in addition to limitations in movement.

«Diagnoses are difficult to assume and understand, that takes time. But the more information you have and understand what they are facing, it will be easier and the patient will be better cared for, “Vergara said in an interview with the whistle.

Accompaniment to the elderly

Currently at Hogar La Ponderosa, they care for 12 patients who entered the institution and are in the place permanently, where they receive special dedication, accompaniment and attention from each of the specialists 24 hours a day. Similarly, they are responsible for the daily care of older adults, from 9:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the afternoon, depending on the needs of each patient and her family.

For three years in this home they have specialized in the neuropsychological care of patients, after its founders realized that in the country there are few centers that are dedicated to preserving the quality of life of adults greater with cognitive disorders, according to information from María Edith Anselmi Rizo, director of the institution.

María Edith Anselmi indicated that Hogar La Ponderosa has capacity for 16 people and they are setting up another space to increase their coverage to 22 permanent patients. Likewise, she hopes that more homes like this one continue to be enabled in the country to care for older adults in a timely manner and diagnose the disease on time.
